Chris Chaky

I'm running for Town Meeting because I believe we can build a greener, more affordable Brookline with fully-funded schools. I'm an avid reader, public transit enthusiast, and frequent biker. I love Brookline's many parks, vibrant businesses, and walkable streets -- but high housing costs and budget shortfalls are making it difficult for families to stay and thrive here. Having moved to the Boston area in 2015 to pursue a PhD in Government at Harvard, and now serving as an Associate Director of Analytics at HBR, I aim to bring my experience in public policy and data-driven decision making to Town Meeting. To tackle our challenges in housing affordability, school funding, and sustainability, I support progressive policies that encourage smart, transit-oriented growth. We can build more housing, support commercial development, fund affordable housing, and build safer streets for people and bikes -- all in dense communities near transit. Supporting these kinds of growth opportunities can allow more families to stay in Brookline, broaden the tax base to bring in more revenue for schools and streets, avoid possible property tax increases, and promote sustainable commutes.

Elizabeth Anne Hudson

I moved to Brookline over 10 years ago when I started law school at Boston University. While at BU, I lived near Cleveland Circle and in Washington Square. I moved to downtown Boston but after a couple of years I knew I had to come back to Brookline. When an apartment in my price range became available in Coolidge Corner, I jumped at the opportunity. I’ve wanted to live here since I first stepped off the T and walked into the Brookline Booksmith. I love living in such a vibrant, walkable community. Everything I need is a 10 minute walk away, an independent bookstore, a grocery store, my doctor, my dentist, and even my dog’s vet. I’m running for Brookline Town Meeting to ensure that everyone who wants to live in this wonderful community can afford to do so.

Favorite spot in Precinct 17 - Eureka! Puzzles and Games. Whether I’m looking for my family’s annual Christmas puzzle(s), picking up a present for my nieces, or grabbing the perfect game for a night with friends, I know Eureka! has exactly what I need.

Thai Johnson

I am a 29 year old from Marietta, Georgia who moved to Brookline in 2021 to pursue a Master’s degree in music and never looked back! After four years of living in Coolidge Corner, I decided to get involved with local politics because I want to make a difference in people’s lives. From fears of being priced out of the area to uncertainty regarding the future, folks feel as if there are too few leaders looking out for them. As a Town Meeting Member, it will be my focus to bring comfort and transparency to my constituents in Precinct 17 and for all of Brookline. I believe very strongly in servant-leadership, so if there is an opportunity to do right by the people, then I will do everything in my power to take it. Whether that’s working to increase the supply of affordable housing, ensuring our community’s children have the access to the quality education they need, or crafting policies to bring more local business to our town, I will strive to fight for what is best for the citizens of Brookline.

Michael Vaughan

I am a native New Englander and live in Precinct 17 with my wife Tess. In my spare time, I enjoy weightlifting, live music, and am an avid reader.

Benjamin Dubin (2 year)

I have been a resident of Brookline for 20 years and I love living here. My wife and I have a daughter who is now at Brookline High School and has been in the Brookline School system since kindergarten. I want Brookline to remain a vibrant community that can sustain itself economically.  I want to be a Town Meeting Member to help guide the future of Brookline and specifically the precinct that I will represent.

As a Town Meeting Member, I want to help the town to increase its housing opportunities on all levels of affordability in both large and small ways. In addition, I want to focus on having the town find more opportunities to increase its economic base by creating policies to encourage businesses to come to and stay in Brookline.  Also, Brookline has great schools, but the system is not balancing its budget. There needs to be a hard look at whether funds are being properly and efficiently spent, while making sure the schools provide excellence to their students and community.

Favorite spot in Precinct 17 - Brookline Booksmith. Every community needs a great bookstore and I am so glad that we have one.

Rhea Paul (1 year)

When in 2021 I retired from 40 years of university teaching in the field of allied health professions, I wanted to live closer to my son and his family. They had lived very happily in Brookline as renters but, like so many others, could not afford to buy a place to settle here permanently and had moved to Quincy. Still my son highly recommended Brookline as an ideal place for a retired widow who is something of a ‘culture vulture.’ Because I was looking to downsize from a family home in Connecticut, I thought I would be easily able to afford a nice, small condo in Brookline. Boy, was I wrong! Even the most modest available condos cost far above the substantial amount I was able to get for my large home in Conn. at the top of a booming seller’s market. After a great deal of searching, my son was able finally to find me a tiny condo in Coolidge Corner that had been the “super’s” basement apartment before condo conversion. It was enough for my needs, and I loved the location within easy walking distance of the library, shopping, and public transport. I have found Brookline to be an extremely vibrant and welcoming place to live, and value not only the convenience of our neighborhood, but the vivid mix of people I encounter and the musical welter of languages I hear spoken on the street as I make my way on foot around town. I feel I was extremely lucky to be able to gain a foothold in this lovely community, and I think others deserve the same chance I had. Affordable housing is a top priority for me and a critical need for Brookline’s future, to ensure that we continue to be a growing, thriving community that accommodates many different kinds of people. Housing issues touch almost every aspect of town life from making it possible for people who teach in our schools to live in our town so we can attract the best teachers to planning for the kinds of development that will continue to support our high quality school system and recreational facilities through expanding the town’s tax base. I would be honored to serve as a Town Meeting member in order to help shape Brookline’s future as a place for everyone.

Favorite spot in Precinct 17 - the Coolidge Corner Library. I love to walk by and see kids playing in the window seats and the reading room when it’s illuminated on the nights the library stays open until nine. I love to go in and wander through the shelves until a title catches my eye, then sit in one of the comfy arm chairs and read the first few pages to see if I want to borrow the book.

Joseph Valencia (1 year)

I am 27 years old and moved to Brookline last year, when my partner and I were drawn to Greater Boston as an ideal place to pursue our careers in medicine and biotechnology, respectively. I am about to start an industry position as a researcher helping to design vaccines, after recently graduating with a PhD in computer science from Oregon State University. I am running for Town Meeting because I believe that affordable housing is a prerequisite for economic stability and mobility. I see Coolidge Corner as a model neighborhood and hope to support policies which improve environmental sustainability and increase the supply of affordable housing near transit and urban amenities.

Brookline's Precinct 17

Precinct 17 is the best place to live in Brookline! Our community is comprised of renters and owners, students and retirees, families and young professionals who all enjoy our walkable, culturally vibrant neighborhood. Our precinct is a model of how we can live close to transit, reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, and support a thriving local economy from the Brookline Booksmith to Michael's Deli. We love our local library, and we think everyone should be able to walk to a Trader Joe's!

We're running to provide representation that works for all of the diverse people who live in Coolidge Corner, in all phases of our lives.
